Antiques, Color, Contemporary Life… connecting the colorful dots! A Message from Barbara Jacobs

A Message from Barbara Jacobs of Barbara Jacobs Color and Design...

"Do you love antiques? Even if you are partial to Contemporary design, you have to check out this amazing web site that is a fantastic resource for all types of antiques, from lighting to furniture to architectural elements.

"They have a unique—and fun—feature on the site. You can select a color from a rainbow band of color options and you’ll be able to see how any of those colors will look when used with the antique piece you’re looking at on their site.

"How did I find out about this? Even though I’m a designer of contemporary rugs, they asked me to write a section about using antique textiles in a contemporary environment. As a color consultant, I wanted to make the connection using color as the bridge. Together we selected a group of four, to start with: two antique rugs, and two other antique textiles. I really enjoyed creating color palettes especially for these fine antique pieces, all from two noteworthy showrooms in San Francisco. I was fortunate to be able to personally visit these two fine showrooms during a recent trip to the Bay Area. It was a great opportunity to see some of these fine antiques in a real-life setting.

Green expo features Silk Road Weaves with GoodWeave photo exhibition “Faces of Freedom”*

If you are traveling to Washington DC in early October, be sure to visit the Green Expo at the DC Convention Center, on October 10th to 11th, where you will see some wonderful new “Green” products. The Green Festival, organized by Global Exchange and Green America, is a two-day expo and festival celebrating sustainably made products. Attended by tens of thousands of socially and environmentally conscious consumers, the Green Festival is the largest event of its kind in the world.

38th Annual Martha's Vineyard Antiques Show: July 31 - August 2

The 38th Annual Martha's Vineyard Antiques Show and Sale begins Friday July 31st at the Edgartown Elementary School. National and International antique dealers will be offering the finest antiques, nauticals, paintings, jewelry, furniture and much, much, more. The Antiques Show is sponsored by The Rotary Club and proceeds benefit The Boys and Girls Club, The Martha's Vineyard Museum, and The Island Affordable Housing Fund. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $8 at the Edgartown National Bank and Murdick's Fudge locations, or for $10 at the door. The antiques show runs from Friday July 31st through Sunday August 2nd at the Edgartown Elementary School on West Tisbury Rd in Edgardtown.

In association with the three day antiques show and sale there is also a one day Artisans Festival on Saturday August 1st. The outdoor fun continues on Sunday, August 2nd with local antique dealers from Martha's Vineyard. (Also at the Edgartown Elementary School).

32nd Annual Nantucket Antiques Show: July 23 - July 26

NANTUCKET, MA - The Nantucket Fireman's Association will host its 32nd annual, three-day Nantucket Antiques Show. The show will be held at Nantucket High School, 10 Surfside Road.

The benefit show kicks off on July 23 with a preview party, 5 - 7:30 pm, offering an opportunity to see the many wonderful antiques on display, and to enjoy hors d'ouvres and lots of good company. The cost is $50, and reservations are strongly recommended; for tickets, call 757-220-0400.

The regular show days are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 24 - 26. This year's show will host over 21 dealers from all over the United States and Europe. They will offer a range of beautiful antiques from the Eighteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries including furniture, paintings, prints, lighting, jewelry, Oriental rugs and more. Dealers will be available all three days to answer questions and explain the rich history of their items.

Colony Rug launches newly redesigned website

Colony Rug recently relaunched their totally new and completely redesigned website: www.colonyrug.com. The redesigned site features several new sections that include: Exclusives, The Backyard, and Inside the Trade. The Exclusive section features products that are made exclusively for Colony Rug. The Backyard section features images of products that are currently in stock for immediate turnaround, and their new Inside the Trade section was created exclusively for Colony Rug's growing base of Trade professionals (not accessible for the general public) where Colony Rug will communicate directly about the arrival of new products, services and designer only prices.

"We have already had a fantastic response by our current designer base as well as our regular clientele," says Colony Rug's Paige Pieroni. "The recent Boston RDC show was fun, but the lighting for PowerPoint visuals was terrible! So it goes, in the world of convention-hall presentations. But now that the dust has settled after the show, I'm working on making my program available to you as a slide show that you can view in your own home under more user-friendly conditions even if you do not have PowerPoint on your computer.

In 2009 The Greenest Color for Your Floor is Not “To Dye For”

 

Medfield, MA - Boston area colorist and rug designer Barbara Jacobs/Silk Road Weaves introduces the Simply Natural Collection. Taking “Green” one step further, Jacobs creates a new group of designs featuring richly textural variations of luminous dimensions in a range of undyed colors.  Hallmarks of the new collection are bold or low-contrast textures and subtle neutrals that are earthy and softly shimmering.  The new works are easily customized for shape and size and, as with all collections from Silk Road Weaves, custom fiber combinations are possible, and personalized service is a specialty.

States Jacobs, a member of RUGMARK—the organization working to end child labor in the carpet industry— “All of our rugs are Green, in the sense that they are made of sustainable materials—and ‘human green’ in the sense that there is no child labor used and the weaving companies I work with are pro-active in the social aspects of their company.  While I am always intrigued by and focused on color, I’m particularly excited about the potential for creativity that exists within the framework of the more limited—but very beautiful—range of undyed colors that comprise this new collection. I’m starting with a very minimalist approach but additional designs will continue to unfold.

I’m using wool and silk, of course, but there are a number of other fibers that offer intriguing texture and design possibilities that will be great in many settings from informal to opulent. This can even be a wonderful alternative for people who feel they have sensitivity to wool, who may have not been able to find interesting custom carpets until now.”
